Alcohol Testing

While drug tests are becoming increasingly common, alcohol testing is less so, the reason for this is because as of right now, alcohol is not an illegal substance. That does not mean that you will never have an alcohol test.

The most common reason for a person to be tested for alcohol is due to a driving offense. If you are pulled over and the officer suspects that you have been imbibing in alcohol before getting behind the wheel they will administer a breathalyzer test right there. Even if the breathalyzer does not show you to be over the legal limit at that precise moment, there is a chance that you will be brought to the jail and retested. The reason for the second test is because it can take a little while for the alcohol to show up in your blood system and register on a breathalyzer.

If you have been arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, you should insist that you also be given a blood test. The reason for this is that not all breathalyzers are accurate. Many of them can be off as much as 15-23%. If you do not think that you are technically over the legal limit, you should have the blood test done so that you know if you are really as intoxicated as the breathalyzer indicated. There is chance that the blood test could get you off the hook.

If you have been arrested for an alcohol related offense, the courts are most likely going to insist that you are required to take random alcohol tests. If you do not pass these tests, or if you refuse to take them you will be in violation of your court agreement and the court will have your arrested again. In some cases, the court will order that a breathalyzer be attached directly to your car. This is rigged to your ignition so that if you do not blow in it, your car will not start, the same is true if you blow in it and you have been drinking.  You may also be randomly selected for illicit drug testing.

After an alcohol related driving offense you are not going to be allowed to drink any alcohol at all. If the court feels that you have been they will take a hair sample and test the follicle. If you have been imbibing in alcohol it will show up in your hair. Each half inch of hair growth is will indicates a month and the court can use this information to put together your drinking history.
